Revenue Sharing on a Wordpress Blog

April 25, 2009 by: Rick Martin

nintendo-ds-ninjaMy first introduction to revenue sharing on Wordpress was Ryan’s awesome Lost Laowai blog. It’s a great way to run a team blog, because you’re not asking people to voluntarily contribute their content. Volunteering is for suckers…

With revenue sharing each writer will actually earn some revenue if they post, and so there is incentive for everyone to write. I’m not sure how Ryan set it up (he’s actually a proper web designer, I just install stuff), but on my new DS Ninja blog I’ve managed to set up revenue sharing in a pretty simple way.

I installed an old plugin called Adsense Deluxe, which is used primarily to integrate Google Adsense  into the text of your blog posts.  But it turns out that you can use it to insert many kinds of ads, not just adsense. So in theory if I have a team of writers, they can all insert their own Google ads into their own blog posts and earn money directly from any clicks that they get. All they have to do is send me their Adsense ID, and I’ll configure the adblock and give them a script to insert in their post.

Adsense Deluxe

UPDATE: Advertising Manager is a more recent plugin that’s much better than the Adsense Deluxe plugin because it allows you to set up ads for each author, and gives a neato dropdown menu in the WYSIWYG editor. I’d recommend this over Adsense Deluxe by far. Though both will give you a functional revenue sharing system.

By the way (*trumpet trumpet*), I’m formally announcing my new blog DSNINJA.COM, a Nintendo DS review written by a team of ninjas. If you’d like to be a writer, drop me a line.  Each writer will assume a ninja identity, and blog under that alias. I CALL RED NINJA!!! Ha… All the rest of you guys can get another color…

For the record, this Nintendo DS blog actually sprung out of my recent failed job application for a Nintendo DS game review position. It was an absolutely grueling 3 week application process, and I had to write a ton of content for it. I made it past the first and second stages, only to be turned away at the last minute. But on the plus side (I had to look really hard for a plus side!) I do get to keep all this Nintendo DS content that I’ve written.  And that’s where the idea for DSNinja came from.

Let me know if you guys have any thoughts or comments. And as I said, if you want to be a Ninja feel free to join me!

p.s. As the site is just starting out, I’d appreciate it if any of you guys could give it a digg, delicious, tweet or stumble. Could certainly use a kickstart. :)

Update (July 4 2009): The blog is coming along nicely, and I’ve had a few people jump on board as writers. Here is the DS Ninja clan so far. Click here if you want to join up.
