Tokyo CGM Night 4

April 30, 2009 by: Rick Martin

Danny Choo CGM NightThe latest Choo/Shuttleworth CGM event was held at Super Deluxe last night. As always it was a great chance to catch up with old friends and meet some new ones too. It was especially fun catching up with Shane Sakata, the writer behind The Nihon Sun. Her blog is one of my favorite Japan blogs out there simply because she doesn’t f*** around and consistently dishes out solid content.

Anyway, as usual I did bring my Flip camera. And for anyone who couldn’t attend, here’s quick look at Danny and Andrew’s presentation from the event. Danny’s section is in Japanese, but Andrew jumps in with English at the end.

Tokyo CGM night looks like some kind of Danny Choo fan club event! Why do you waste your time with that sort of thing?

  2. Rick Martin says:

Luckily dozens of fascinating people from all over Tokyo are also in attendance wasting their time. So it’s not all that bad. ;)

  3. MoD says:

I am going to start running around attacking ppl with a storm trooper suit. lol.

  4. takaaki says:

I’m not really sure if having “top” bloggers and companies is a good approach. Smells money.

  5. Rick Martin says:

@takaaki You could be right. I usually attend because I’m new to Tokyo and I don’t know many people here. So events like this do hold value for me.

I’m encouraged that they are doing something at least. If it “smells of money,” it doesn’t offend me so much. If there’s a presentation or product promotion that I don’t want to watch, I just go to the bar and get a beer. Unlike some other events, CGM is usually quite affordable (In fact, CGM has been free up until this one, which was 2000 yen to get in).

I think overall it’s a positive thing. I think anyone who wants to criticize it should have an alternative suggestion.

  6. Danny Choo says:

    Hey Rick,
Was great seeing you again! Lemme know how things progress regarding our previous discussion and whether you need more support - tell me what you need and I’ll make it happen.

  7. Jamaipanese says:

looks like a great event to attend to meet and network with like minded people.

    All presentations are in Japanese?

  8. Shane says:

Rick - thanks for your kinds words about my site. I look forward to collaborating with you on some of the projects we spoke about.

Like you I have enjoyed meeting others involved with CGM. It’s a great way to connect with others and there are some great people (like you) involved in the Tokyo Web scene. It’s both a bit overwhelming and inspiring at the same time don’t you think?

  9. Rick Martin says:

@Jamaipanese I think Andrew and Danny try to mix it up a bit with the languages. Sometimes English, sometimes Japanese.

@Shane Yeah, it’s a pretty cool event. It’s especially fun for me, because I barely know anybody in this country so far. So I like it a lot. Feel free to drop a line anytime. I’m ‘pandapassport’ on skype.

  10. Can’t wait to attend the next one. Why? It’s just plain fun. Don’t overthink the event.
